Since starting college, I have started to discover more about myself. Especially after taking two personality tests in my freshman class.
After taking the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) personality test, I discovered mine is ISTJ-T. If you don't know what this test is, these letters most likely mean nothing to you, so let me explain. (definitions come from notes I've taken in class)
I stands for introvert. def- interest in ideas in your mind that explain the world; get their energy and essential stimulation from within- the inner world of thoughts and reflections
S stands for sensing. def- interest in what is real, and can be seen, heard, touched; take in information by the way of the five senses- sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell
T stands for thinking. def- interest in what is logical and works by cause and effect; use their mental processing function to make decisions on the basis of logical analysis
J stands for judgment. def- interest in acting by organizing, planning, and deciding
other T stands for turbulent. def- more likely to be self-conscious perfectionists, concerned about their abilities or about how others perceive them
I also have taken the Clifton Strengths Quest Finder. This test determines your top five strengths out of over 30 options. Mine were relator, intellection, responsibility, input, and discipline. Here are some explanations of those.

I also have taken the Clifton Strengths Quest Finder. This test determines your top five strengths out of over 30 options. Mine were relator, intellection, responsibility, input, and discipline. Here are some explanations of those.
- Relator- describes my attitude towards my relationships. This theme pulls me toward people I already know. I'm comfortable with intimacy and I want to understand their feelings, goals, fears, and dreams. I then also want them to understand mine. I know this kind of closeness implies a certain amount of risk. A relationship has value when it is genuine.
- Intellection- I like to think and I like mental activity. This need for mental activity may be focused or it may lack focus. I am the kind of person who enjoys my time alone because it is my time for musing and reflection.
- Responsibility- This theme forces me to take psychological ownership for anything I commit to and I feel emotionally bound to follow it through to completion. If for some reason I cannot deliver, I automatically start to look for ways to make it up to the other person. When assigning new responsibilities, people will look to me first because they know it will get done. When people come to me for help I must be selective because my willingness to volunteer may sometimes lead me to take on more than I should.
- Input- I am inquisitive and collect things/information. I keep acquiring, compiling, and filing stuff away. It's interesting and keeps my mind fresh. I have a desire for knowledge. By nature, I am the ideal example of a person with an open and agile mind.
- Discipline- My world needs to be predictable and ordered/planned. I set routines and focus on timelines and deadlines. I'm not necessarily neat and clean, but I do need precision. I must understand that not everyone feels my urge for predictability. My dislike for surprises, impatience with errors, my routines and detail orientation can be misinterpreted as controlling behaviors. However, these behaviors can be understood as my instinctive method for maintaining my progress and productivity in the face of life's many distractions.
As you can see, I had very similar results from both of these tests. At first, after reading my results, I thought I sounded like a boring person. But after some reflection, I realized that what I thought were boring traits about myself were amazing gifts from God. Learning about myself and my strengths helped me to see what I am good at and what I need to focus on in the future. Knowing what I am good at will help me decide what kind of work I would be best at and it will help me know how to limit myself.
